The Pima Community College volleyball team (3-3, 1-1 in conference) won its first conference match of the season but it didn’t come without a little drama.
The Aztecs defeated South Mountain Community College in five games (25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 27-29, 15-11) on Friday in Phoenix.
Kassidy Crawford (Sahuaro HS) spiked Pima’s final two set points in the fifth game. Kristin Hains (Marana Mountain View HS) and Nykole Adun (Catalina HS) each had a kill earlier in the game to help the Aztecs break out of a tie and take an 11-8 lead. Pima held on to the lead for good.
In the first game, the Aztecs had two six-straight game points but South Mountain kept coming to keep the score close. Hope Redhawk (Valley Union HS) and Adun each had two kills down the stretch to help the Aztecs win the second game. South Mountain scored seven straight set points to its advantage in the third game. Pima tied the fourth gameon three occasions but in the end South Mountain gained the advantage and forced a fifth game tie-breaker.
Hains led the Aztecs with 17 kills while Crawford finished with 12 kills. Noelle Olson (Florence HS) had 43 assists for the match and Courtney Pitts (Catalina HS) contributed with 22 digs. Andrea Burnett (Marana Mountain View HS) had three blocks and two aces.
The Aztecs are back at the West Campus on Wednesday when they host Phoenix College at 7 p.m.
