The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (17-15) had a quick start but fell behind in the second half on Thursday in its 58-44 loss at Mesa Community College in the Region I, Division II finals. This was the fourth year in a row Pima and Mesa had played in the finals and the second straight year Mesa has beaten the Aztecs.
Pima started the game out on an 11-0 run as Mesa didn’t score its first points until seven minutes into the game. The Aztecs got its biggest lead of the game after Felicia Foster (Peoria HS) hit a three-pointer to make it 18-5. Mesa came back and ended the half on a 20-2 run to take a 25-22 lead at the break.
Mesa hit four 3-pointers in the first 10 minutes of the second half to get up 43-31.The Aztecs were able to cut Mesa’s lead down to nine points on two occasions but that’s as close as they’d get.
Foster scored a team-high 13 points for the Aztecs. A’jha Edwards (Tombstone HS) finished with six points and 19 rebounds. DJ Davis (Tolleson HS) had a tough game scoring two points after going 0 for 7 from the field. She finished with four assists.
The Aztecs finish the season with an overall record of 17-15.
