The Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks girls’ softball squad has won three straight playoff games in the 5A-II double-loss elimination tournament. The wins have put the No. 3 seed in the state semi-final game.

Saturday, the Nighthawks defeated Chaparral, 5-3. They had opened the playoffs with home wins over Mountain View 15-8, and Sunnyside 5-3.

The Nighthawks have now assured themselves of a berth in the semi-final game on Wednesday, May 11 at 5 p.m. at Rose Mofford Softball Complex, Field No. 4. They will play the winner between Sunnyside and Chaparral. Even if the Nighthawks were to lose that game, they would get a re-match game that would start approximately 30 minutes after the end of the first game. At stake would be a possible berth in the state title game on Friday, May 13 at 6 p.m. at Rose Mofford, Field No. 1.

Against Chaparral, the Nighthawks were led by Robin Landrith’s home run. Sarah Rodriguez homered against Mountain View, while Erin Satterfield and Alexis Clinton each homered against Sunnyside. Pitcher Makayla McAdams won all three games.

Top ranked Canyon Del Oro is also off to a good start Friday in quest of the 4A-I state title in girls softball, defeating Sunnyslope, 12-2. Pitcher Mattie Fowler improved her record to 11-0. Kayla Bonstrom hit a home run. CDO will now host No. 9 Saguaro on Tuesday, May 10 at 4 p.m.

In 2A play, the Pusch Ridge Christian Lions have ridden their second seed into the state semi-final game in girls softball. The Lions opened up Friday with a 12-2 win over Phoenix Christian that lasted just five innings. Then, they came back for another 10-run mercy rule win over Morenci, 11-1 in six innings. Their reward will be a game vs. No. 3 Bourcade at Rose Mofford, Field No. 2 on Friday, May 13 at 8 p.m. If the Lions win, they will play the winner between No. 1 Benson and No. 4 Willcox on Saturday, May 14 at 6 p.m. at Rose Mofford, Field No. 4.

Continuing with girls’ softball, Mountain View lost to Ironwood Ridge 15-8 in the first round of 5A-II play Saturday, April 30, despite a three-run home run off the bat of Ashley Rivera. Then, on Tuesday, May 3, the Mountain Lions were eliminated by Desert Mountain, 9-7, in the double-loss elimination tournament. Marana was knocked out in the first round of 4A-I play by Sahuaro, 11-4, on Friday. Despite the loss, Courtney Lacaillade powered out two home runs for the Tigers.

Northwest boys’ baseball did not yield as much success.

On Saturday, Canyon del Oro lost to Pueblo 3-1 in 4A-I play. Williams eliminated Pusch Ridge in 2A, 14-3, on Tuesday, My 3. The Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks were the only team to win a game, as they split their games in double-loss elimination play. On Saturday, April 30, they opened with a 5-4 win over Valley Vista. Kurt Bailey had the game-winning two-out single. Kyle Petty picked up the win in relief. On Tuesday, May 3, Chaparral crushed Ridge 13-0 in the second round. Next, in a tight game on Thursday, the Nighthawks prevailed over Tolleson 3-2.Trey Higginbotham pitched a complete-game win, and struck out 11 batters. He also doubled in two of the Nighthawks three runs.

However, the Nighthawks were eliminated by Desert Mountain, 4-3, in their next game, played Saturday.
