At the end of 5A-II state swim competition last weekend, Ironwood Ridge got on the bus with a top-10 finish from both the boys' and girls' teams, as well as enough high placings from young athletes to serve notice of the future.

The girls' team finished fifth overall, led by a core of freshman swimmers including Megan McGovern, who took fifth in the 100-yard backstroke and eighth in the 200-yard individual medley, as well as being first in the water on the Nighthawks' third-place 200-yard medley relay squad.

Freshman Alexandria Nickles finished 10th in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle, and also contributed on Ironwood Ridge's sixth-place 400-yard relay team.

Senior Elizabeth Bolin (12th in the 50-yard freestyle and 16th in the 100-yard freestyle) and freshman Caitlyn Kelley (14th and 15th in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events) contributed points both individually and through relay competition.

The Ironwood Ridge boys finished eighth overall, counting heavily on point-scoring performances from junior Matthew Berg (third in the 100-yard backstroke and seventh in the 50-yard freestyle) and sophomore Ryan Bean (sixth in the 100-yard butterfly). Both helped the Nighthawks' 200-yard medley relay team to a fourth-place finish, and senior Trevor Whiteside added his own contribution, finishing tenth in the 200-yard individual medley and 13th in the 500-yard freestyle.

Mountain View

The Mountain Lion girls' team finished 13th overall, and saw its highest finishes from freshman Kelsey Wouti, who placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle and eighth in the 100-yard butterfly.

Mountain View found most of its success in relay competition. Wouti, along with senior Rachel Dodge and juniors Ashley Fall and Elena Whitton, raced to an 11th-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Fall, Whitton and Wouti joined sophomore Hannah Dodge to notch another 11th-place result in the 200-yard medley relay.

The Mountain Lion boys finished 18th as a team, and senior James Daugherty ended his prep career with quick times in both the 200-yard individual medley (11th) and 500-yard freestyle (12th). The Mountain View boys were also tough in relay events. Seniors Kaleb Sabin and Josh McDade, and junior Matt Aguilar, along with Daugherty, finished 13th in the 200-yard freestyle relay, and the same team racked up a 15th place time in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
