The Pima Community College baseball team (17-15-1, 7-9 in conference) split a doubleheader with Paradise Valley Community College on Saturday at the West Campus.
Jake Cole (Sahuaro HS) pitched a gem for the Aztecs in their 3-2 win in the first game and got help from the offense in the late innings. Cole (2-3) pitched a complete-game giving up two runs (none earned) on four hits with 14 strikeouts and one walk on 92 pitches. In the 7th inning, he gave up a leadoff triple but struck out the side to end the threat.
Paradise Valley scored two runs in the 1st inning and the Pima offense couldn’t get anything going until the 6th inning. With two outs, Devon Carrillo (Sahuaro HS) hit an RBI single to score Andre Porterfield (Sahuarita HS). Luis Robles (Flowing Wells HS) tied the game at 2-2 with his RBI single that scored Alvaro Flores (Tech. Institute of Monterrey). Alec Beyersdorf (Catalina Foothills) led off the bottom of the 7th with an infield single and Porterfield came in to run for him. Later with the bases loaded, Flores was hit by a pitch which scored Porterfield to win the game. Flores went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored for the game.
The Aztecs dropped the second game 14-3. Paradise Valley broke open a 2-1 game with five runs in the 6th inning, three in the 8th and four in the 9th. Dylan Dyson (Flowing Wells HS) hit a 2-run homerun in the 8th inning for Pima. Kyle Becerra (Marcos de Niza HS) and Zach Schira (Marcos de Niza) each scored a run in the game. Flores finished the game 2 for 3. Scotty Watson (Empire HS) took the loss (2-4).
The Aztecs will continue its four-game homestand on Tuesday when they host Glendale Community College at the West Campus. The first game starts at noon.
