Marana Parks and Recreation is currently taking registrations for its 2012 Youth Flag Football League for boys and girls. The league will start Jan. 7 and commence March 10.
Games will be held on Saturday mornings at Crossroads at Silverbell District Park, 7548 N. Silverbell Road. This fast-paced, 5-on-5 flag football league is for ages 6-14, and consists of three age groups: 6-8, 9-11 and 12-14. All participants must be of age as of Jan. 28.
Last year, the league consisted of about 20 teams with approximately 250-300 participants. While the players are mostly local residents, Corey Larriva, director of the league, noted that some teams come from surrounding areas, such as Oro Valley.
Larriva described the games as being fairly competitive.
“Parents are pumped up, and the kids are here to win. But while there is a competitive level to it, overall there is a very positive vibe,” he said. Larriva has been involved with the league for nearly 10 years, when he started out as a referee. He is looking forward to this upcoming season.
There are three registration periods — early, late and last-minute — and prices increase as the season approaches. Fees during the early registration period, which ends Nov. 18, are $60 for Marana residents, and $72.50 for non-residents.
Open tryouts will take place on Dec. 10. The parks and recreation department encourages participants to attend. Players who are not present at tryouts will be randomly placed on a team.
Volunteer coaches also are needed. They must be able to attend a preliminary coaches meeting on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 9 a.m., in order to coach in the league.
Coaches will then make draft selections at the end of open tryouts. Additionally, all head coaches will receive a single, $50 account card for team expenses.
Marana Parks and Recreation will also be hiring sports officials for this league. It is looking for participants who are at least 16 years old.
