The Pima Community College softball team (23-15, 15-11 in conference) took the first game in extra innings but dropped the second at Mesa Community College on Saturday in Mesa.
The Aztecs scored three runs in the 9th inning to win the first game 3-0. Yvette Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) pitched a complete-game shutout to improve her record to 9-11 on the year. She gave up two hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Alvarez helped her own cause in the 9th inning when she drove in two runs. Alejandra Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) hit an RBI double in the inning.
Pima took an early lead in the second game but Mesa struck back to score five runs in the 5th inning in its 6-2 loss. Alvarez hit an RBI single that drove in Gemma Contreras (Salpointe Catholic HS) in the 1st inning. Alvarez finished 3 for 3 with an RBI and a double for the game. Cynthia Pelayo (Vision HS) hit a sacrifice-fly in the 3rd inning that scored Aubre Carpenter (Sabino HS). Carpenter went 1 for 2 with a run scored, a walk and two stolen bases. Stephanie Vejar (Tucson Magnet HS) took the loss (11-3). She pitched 4 and one-third innings giving up four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
The Aztecs will play a doubleheader at Glendale Community College on Tuesday. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
