More than 600 Amphitheater fourth and fifth grade students from 13 schools will come together for the annual Elementary Track Meet. It is a day filled with hurdles, jumps and dashes.

The meet takes place at Canyon Del Oro High School on Friday, March 7, 2014, 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The events include the One Mile Run, 100 Meter Dash, Track Hurdles, Running Long Jump, Softball Throw, Shot Put, Shuttle Relay, and many more.

Special needs students will compete in the 100 and 50 Meter Runs and the 25 Meter Walk/Wheelchair race.

Track meet coordinator and Mesa Verde Elementary P.E. Teacher Anne Wheaton said, “The vision of the Amphitheater Elementary Track Meet is everybody participates for fun and fitness.

Parent volunteers and Canyon del Oro students will help run the event, and be there to cheer on the athletes, and hand out ribbons. Many of the CDO students participated in the track meet themselves when they were in grade school.

Despite budget challenges, Amphitheater schools have maintained elementary physical education for our students. Wheaton said, “I think that in itself is a reflection of the district’s commitment to health and fitness.”
