Sunnyside be-Devils Mountain Lion

Last Friday, on a chilly Homecoming night where the students chosen as king and queen of Mountain View were awarded white roses, the Mountain Lion football team had only one color in mind: the blue helmets of the visiting Sunnyside Blue Devils.

Unfortunately for Mountain View, 3-5 and traveling to Rincon on Friday, too often the blurred blue of Sunnyside running back Manny Aguilar’s helmet could be viewed streaking into the end zone, helping propel the #5 Blue Devils (6-2) to a 56-14 win.

The Blue Devils employed a bruising ground attack to slowly grind down the Mountain Lions’ defense, rushing for 245 yards and six touchdowns, three from Aguilar.

Costly miscues were the theme of the evening for Mountain View; every time momentum momentarily swung in the Mountain Lions’ favor, they were halted by dropped balls, penalties and turnovers.

“We’re just not catching the ball, we’re making too many mistakes,” said Mountain View head coach Paul Schmidt.

One example: after a Sunnyside touchdown gave the Blue Devils a 6-0 early in the first quarter, the Mountain Lions took possession of the ball on their own 35. A long drive comprised of quick scrambles from fleet-footed senior quarterback CJ Evenson and physical rushing from junior running back Myles Williams placed Mountain View at the Sunnyside 1, poised to tie, if not take the lead.

Then Williams took a handoff, dove into the middle of the line and fumbled the ball into the hands of a waiting Sunnyside defender. The Mountain Lions would never get so close again. Sunnyside scored 20 unanswered points before Mountain View’s first touchdown with 2:08 left in the second half, and headed into the locker room with a 34-7 lead.

The second half was more of the same, as the Blue Devil offense seemed to take its cue from the sports cars carrying homecoming royalty around the outskirts of the field, with each drive moving slowly and unrelentingly toward the Mountain View end zone.

Despite the loss and a home record of 1-4, a few bright spots gave the black-shirted crowd something to cheer about.

With 5:47 left in the third quarter, quarterback Evenson completed a long pass to Williams, who took the ball 45 yards for a touchdown. Williams finished the game with 181 yards of total offense.

“Myles Williams is a tough, tough kid, he works hard,” said Schmidt.

Evenson passed for 225 yards and rushed for a 12-yard touchdown.

Mountain View travels to Rincon at 7 p.m. Friday, but Schmidt wasn’t thinking about the Rangers last week.

“We haven’t watched film of them yet, we just take things one game at a time, but we’ll just work hard, keep the kids up and work on a good positive attitude,” he said.

A positive attitude will be crucial for the Mountain Lions in the coming weeks.

“We have got to eliminate mistakes, we have two more regular season games to improve and get some W’s,” said Schmidt.
