The Pima Community College baseball team (1-0-1) got a win and fought back to earn a tie on Tuesday at Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix as the Aztecs got good pitching performances in both games.
The Aztecs shut out Paradise Valley 4-0 in seven innings in the first game as Santiago Romero (Sunnyside HS) threw four no-hit innings and Scotty Watson (Empire HS) earned his first save of the season by recording the last nine outs. Romero finished with eight strikeouts and five walks in its first win of the season. Zach Schira (Marcos de Niza HS) provided enough offense with a 2-run double in the 1st inning. Carlo Tacchia (Sunnyside HS) drove in two more runs in the 3rd.
In the second game, the Aztecs scored a run in the 5th inning to tie it up and the game ended at 2-2 after seven innings. Pima got on the board in the 3rd inning when Luis Robles (Flowing Wells HS) hit in Kyle Becerra (Marcos de Niza HS) to give the Aztecs a 1-0 lead. Becerra got on base with a single and later stole second base to set it up. Paradise Valley came back scoring two runs in the 4th inning. Will Holbrook (Sabino HS), Hyrum Formo (Hayden HS) and Keith Zuniga (Nogales HS) combined to give up two runs on seven hits.
The Aztecs will travel to Las Vegas, NV to be part of the College of Southern Nevada Tournament on Thursday and Friday. They will play the College of Southern Idaho at 2:30 p.m. and then the College of Southern Nevada at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
