Non-stop basketball took place at the Pusch Ridge Christian Academy and Canyon Del Oro gym this past week as high school girls and boys basketball teams played in the Northwest Desert Classic Tournament.

This is the sixth year of the tournament and it included local Tucson teams as well as some from Phoenix.

On the girls’ side of the bracket, PRCA cruised to a 52-20 win over Sahuarita High School while Ironwood Ridge High School won by one (43-42) over an aggressive Cienega High School team. CDO lost in its first game on Wednesday to Seton Catholic High School by 20 points. On Thursday, Ironwood Ridge and PRCA lost one and won one out of the two games that they each played. PRCA’s matchup against the disciplined Seton Catholic proved too much as they lost 40-28. PRCA was missing two key players for the tournament: senior forward Noelle Soltero and sophomore guard Lacy Cain. CDO played one game on Thursday and lost to PRCA by 5 points.

On Friday and Saturday, CDO obtained two wins for their last games with a win over Desert Ridge High School and Cienega. Ironwood struggled against Seton Catholic with a 50-21 loss but came back and won by nine over PRCA to finish out the tournament. PRCA struggled at the end to finish the tournament out with two losses.  Desert Vista High School won over Seton Catholic in the championship game 50-42.

As for the guys, Marana High School lost 80-35 against Sunnyside High School but beat Pueblo High School 50-29 over the course of the Wednesday and Thursday tournament games. PRCA lost three of its games by around 20 points except for the first game against Sahuarita High School where they lost by six. CDO won over Marana and Desert Christian High School but lost to Sunnyside by 20 points.

For the last two tournament days, PRCA was heavily beat by Buena High School in a 52-19 loss but beat Pueblo by five points on Saturday. Marana lost in a close game to Desert Christian but pulled out a 20 point win on Saturday against Sahuarita.  CDO finished with a solid 54-17 win over Pueblo but lost their last game by five against Cholla High School. The championship game was between Buena and Sunnyside where Buena won 67-55.
