The Pima Community College track & field teams showed their strengths on home turf on Saturday as several athletes set Nationals Indoor qualifying marks and improved on their qualifying times at the West Campus.
In men’s competition, Eddie Wilcox (Chandler HS) set a national indoor leading mark in the High Jump event with a 7-foot jump. Khalil Hakim (Raymond S. Kellis HS) took 1st place in the Long Jump with a 6.89 meter jump. Austin Stone finished 1st in the 1000 meters race with a time of 2 minutes, 33.90 seconds. Ruben Canastillo (Pueblo HS), Lance Ross (Flowing Wells HS),Chris Leung and Labriel Leach (Catalina HS) finished 2nd in the 4x400 meter relay with a Nationals qualifying time of 3:21.14. Canastillo and Ross improved on their 600 meters national marks and finished second and third respectively.
In women’s competition, Marlee Sherwood (Mesa Mountain View HS) took 1st place in the Triple Jump with a jump of 11.11 meters. Kathy Fisher (Sahuaro HS) took 1st in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.33. Aly Haskell (Empire HS) finished in 1st place in the 600 meter race with a time of 1:37.17 which gave her a Nationals qualifying time while Shelby Slocum (Sahuaro HS) earned her qualifying time in the 1000 meter race after a 1st place finish with a time of 3:08.60. Sabrina Montano (Safford HS) took 2nd in the Shot Put with a throw of 12.68 meters.
The Aztecs will compete in the Glendale CC Indoor Invitational in Glendale on Saturday at noon.
