The Canyon Del Oro Dorados are gaining some confidence as they have won three straight football games to improve to 3-2 for the season.

The Dorados moved up six places in the state’s high school rankings this week to 31st overall, and to ninth place in Division II ranks.

After starting the season 0-2 with some tough losses against rival Ironwood Ridge, and then the upset loss to Mountain View, the Dorados have worked to get their game back on track.

Since the start, the Dorados have come together to defeat Chavez in a close 28-27 victory. They then beat Williams Field, and most recently, blew out Flowing Wells 52-10.

Coach Dustin Peace called the first two victories “too close,” but having a big game against Flowing Wells allowed every player to get on the field.

“We knew if we stuck to the plan and worked on getting better, we’d have a good game,” he said. “It was good to see everybody get on the field in a game that wasn’t so close.”

In Friday’s game, dual-threat quarterback Cooper Smith finished with more than 100 yards on the ground. Senior Blake Martinez had three touchdowns, including a 62-yard catch and run to score.

Josh Brown had an 84-yard punt return Friday night, as the Dorados scored 31 points in the second quarter alone.

Peace said with each victory, the Dorados have been able to gain more confidence and correct some early-season problems as they continue to improve.

That improvement will be put to the test this week as the Dorados prepare to take on Salpointe Catholic in a Division II, Section II showdown on Sept. 30.

Salpointe is 4-1 for the season, coming off a dominating 57-0 victory over the Marana Tigers last week.

Peace agreed Salpointe will be a tough game, but the Dorados continue to work in practice week after week to stay on track.

The Dorados will host Salpointe Friday night. Kick-off is at 7 p.m.
