The A team at Pusch Ridge Christian Academy has won the city championship in its middle school volleyball league.
Pusch Ridge, the Oracle Road school with 455 students in grades 6-12, had 45 players on its team, which plays in the Tucson Independent Athletic League.
Coach Nikki Simpson led her team to a 13-2 record, beating Casas Christian in the championship game.
Members of the team were Olivia Christian, Abby Clark, Shelby Dirkschneider, Leah Edmond, Kaylin Frisby, Haley Haynes, Grace Johnson, Kelly Lienhard, Lindsay Olson, Jamie Ricksecker, Kailey Rohne, Moriah Roters and Clare Wallum.
Dirkschneider was named a most valuable player for her solid serving, great blocking ability and powerful hits, a release said. Rohne was the other MVP with her serving, consistent setting and positive attitude.
“It was a great feeling to fight through losing the first game of the season and go on to win the championship,” Simpson said. “We talked about resilience, communicating and working as a team throughout the season during our devotional time.”
