A steering committee made up of members of Pio Decimo Center, Impact of Southern Arizona, and Amphitheater Public Schools is bringing the Bridges out of Poverty initiative to Southern Arizona as an effective catalyst for reducing poverty. Based on the research of Ruby K. Payne, Ph.D., and Philip E. DeVol, it has been utilized in over 70 communities around the country who have seen evidence of its effectiveness in decreased unemployment and homelessness, increased income, pursuit of post-secondary education, and increased sense of empowerment.

The Bridges Out of Poverty model is an innovative approach to ending poverty, bringing leadership together across economic class and sectors to begin coordinating community-wide efforts to reduce poverty. Bridges recognizes people in poverty, middle class, and wealth as a team of problem solvers. The focus is on solutions, shared responsibilities, new insights, and interdependence. Historically, communities have focused on technical solutions based primarily on individual behavior. This model is unique in that it redefines poverty in terms of a lack of resources.

The steering committee is excited to bring national trainers to Tucson for a three-day trainer certification session July 22-24. The goal is to bring together many people from government, faith and social service organizations, education, and all socio-economic classes to learn how to apply the Bridges practices here in Tucson and go forward sharing the knowledge.  Join us or sponsor a community member by going to our website at or calling  825-0009.
