In regards to the home invasion that occurred in Rancho Vistoso on April 1, I would like to commend the Oro Valley Police Department for their superb response to that life-threatening incident that night.

After attending the informational meeting that the OVPD held for the community last week, I came away confident in the actions of the officers and deputies who were there in the initial minutes and were under fire from the suspect. It is my understanding that many of the officers who responded to that incident were not working at the time, and were responding from their homes to put themselves in harm’s way.

This goes to show how selfless these officers are, and how important a fast response is to a major incident like this.

That being said, I think its important not to let an incident like this tarnish our view of the overall safety in this town. Recently, Oro Valley was named one of “America’s 10 Safest Suburbs” by I don’t think that ranking is purely by chance; it is due to the effective job that our police department does on a day-to-day basis, year after year. We have a lot to be thankful for in Oro Valley.

To those town council members who have made it clear that they would like to reduce funding or diminish the resources available to our police, I have one simple request for you: please leave our police department alone. We are happy just the way things are.

Skip Stevens,

Oro Valley
