It’s only a month away. Do you have your tickets?

Of course, I’m talking about the Accenture Match Play Championship, which returns to Marana for a seventh time Feb. 18-24. The host course again will be The Golf Club at Dove Mountain, formerly known as the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club.

New course name, same exciting golf.

Most of the world’s top 64 golfers are coming back. We’re expecting to see fan favorites Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson and former event winners, including Luke Donald and Hunter Mahan. Few of the best players skip the event, which is one of four World Golf Championships tournaments held every year and has a total purse of more than $8 million.

The event is available to fans in more than 200 countries. Viewership is driven by the quality and variety of the field. We’re talking about the top golfers from every tour: North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. If they’re the best, they’ll be in Marana.

The Town contributes many hours of work to the event. Our police officers, traffic engineers, operations and maintenance crew and communications team all do a stellar job of assisting before and during tournament week. It’s important to us that the tournament is a success and that it keeps coming back. Regional businesses and charities gain many benefits from having the PGA Tour in Marana for a week.

We’ll see who qualifies and who’s coming the week before the event. That’s when tickets start selling quickly, so it’s best to get ahead of the demand.

Fan support is vital to the future of the Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana. It’s a week of fun in the sun and a great way to show the world that this event means something to all of Southern Arizona and that we want to keep it here for as long as possible.

We feel confident the event is coming back in 2014. The PGA tour has already said that it’s committed to the region through next year. On behalf of Town Council and employees, I hope the tournament sets down roots here and remains a late winter tradition in Marana.
