During my 18 months as Marana’s Chief of Police, I have been impressed by the level of dedication and effort our officers, dispatchers, crime scene investigators and records personnel put toward ensuring a safe community.

As part of our mission, we have made a priority of providing unparalleled service and unwavering protection to every person in the Town. We take our mission and responsibility seriously and continually look for new ways and strategies to reduce crime and increase safety.

The police department is working with all Town departments to further the Town’s commitment to being safe, clean and healthy and the most business-friendly municipality in the state.

One recent project we have undertaken to support the Town’s and department’s vision is reaching out to all businesses in the Town to see what concerns they have and how we can provide better service. More than 300 business representatives completed our survey and the information we gleaned has been valuable in helping us identify where and how we need to deploy our resources, where we need to focus our attention and how we can better serve the community. We started holding monthly business coalition meetings in January to allow for the free flow of information and to strengthen our partnership with the business community.

We also have added two key crime-fighting measures. The first, a program called Strategic Targeted Operational Planning (STOP), uses crime data and analysis to show when and where crime is occurring and who may be committing those crimes. Through bi-weekly meetings, we review the information to determine what may be contributing to crime spikes and to develop strategies to address the problem.

The department also has added a plainclothes tactical squad to give us a community oriented response team that proactively targets crime. All of these efforts are being done purposefully to ensure a safe Marana, and early indications are showing that our efforts are paying off.  So far this year, we have seen a 33 percent reduction in violent crime and an 8 percent drop in property crime.

The Marana Police Department is proud to be a resource for the Town’s businesses and residents. We are committed to remaining innovative and providing our great community with unparalleled service.

The VIPS, Marana Volunteers in Police Services, should also be mentioned for dedication to Marana police staff and the Town of Marana.
