just love this time of the year. Fall, it is right around the corner.  The night and morning air gets a little crisper, it’s football season, and best of all, it is the beginning of baking season.  When I think of fall, the first thing I want to make is some apple crisp. 

Do you ever wonder which apples to use when making crisps or pies?  It is a matter of opinion, but this is what I found out. If you have access to the internet, check out this awesome site. All of your apple questions will be answered.  From when to eat the right variety, to which apple has the best flavor at what time of the year.  The website is www.pickyourown.org/apples.htm

My dad was the baker in our family.  I can remember him making apple crisp or an apple pie when the leaves started to change and of course we had to have the real whipped cream on top.  No Cool Whip at our house.

Dad always used what he called a baking apple, ones that weren’t as crisp such as a golden delicious, Jonathan or Mackintosh.  He said that these varieties were a mushier apple and were really sweet so didn’t require much sugar.  Growing up, we had eating apples or baking apples…nothing in between.  

As a kid, the worst part of making anything with apples was the time it took peeling them.  Now as an adult, I know what the final product is going to taste like so it is well worth the time.  

I always liked to eat the peeled apples once they were tossed in with the sugar cinnamon mixture.  I would get into trouble because I would eat the apples as fast as they were peeled and sliced.  

Here is the recipe for Apple Crisp that dad used to make, his mom and his grandmother both made it as well.  It has been around for many years.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.




What You’ll Need:

10-12 large baking apples

1 cup of sugar

1 cup of flour

½ cup softened butter

½ cup nutmeats (walnuts)



Peel and slice 10-12 large baking apples and place in a buttered 9x13 inch pan.  Add 1 cup of sugar and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon and toss to coat.  


Mix the following together with a fork until crumbly:

1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup flour, ½ cup softened butter, ½ cup nutmeats (walnuts)

Put on top of apples.  Bake in a 325 degree oven for 1 hour.  Serve warm with real whipped cream.
