Randy Metcalf/The Explorer, A full moon rose New Year's Eve over the Northwest. When two full moons rise in one calendar month, the second is called a "blue moon." The lunar cycle is 28 days, not exactly matching the Julian calendar, so two full moons rise in one calendar month every 2-1/2 years, or 41 times in a century.
