A forum on domestic violence is being hosted by the Oro Valley prosecutor's office this Thursday, April 23.

The public event, with panelists from the Oro Valley Police Department, the Pima County Attorney's Office and the Pima County Victim / Witness program, runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Oro Valley Town Council Chambers, 11000 N. La Cañada Dr.

Cases of domestic violence "have steadily risen over the past several years," according to a release from Oro Valley. "With the current economic climate, prosecutors are seeing even more of these cases."

The forum should be of value to "anyone interested in learning the effects of domestic violence; anyone who has either been a victim of domestic violence themselves or knows someone who is or has been a victim," the release said.

Incidents of domestic violence often rise with unemployment and financial stress on households, it continued. "It is important to learn about the resources available in your community to help reduce the risk of these cases."

Panelists are sharing Oro Valley's policies regarding domestic violence arrests, the effects of domestic violence on society, and programs available to victims.

"Overall, we hope to educate victims on how and why it is important to seek help and learn what they can expect from the legal system," the release concluded.
