Dr. Satish Hiremath, a 20-year resident of Oro Valley, has formalized his plans to run for mayor of Oro Valley.

Hiremath had previously stated his interests. He issued an announcement last week.

Hiremath is running on a platform of "sustainable change," saying the emphasis of town government should be on ensuring quality of life in the Oro Valley community. He believes the voters' decision should be based on more than whether a candidate is for or against growth, "as has been in the last several elections.

"Poorly constructed economic development agreements combined with inaccurate sales tax projections are straining town resources," Hiremath said. "How will we be able to continue our commitment to being a 'community of excellence' — as our town motto states?

"Until now, constant development has provided the funds we needed for growth, a fine library, and a regionally recognized police force. But almost all property available for development has been developed. Stores stand empty. Unemployment in our community is at an all-time high. The town council projects economic conditions will worsen. Where do we go from here?"

Hiremath has been in private dental practice in Oro Valley for 17 years. He was president of the Greater Oro Valley Arts Council for four years, was named 2007 Community Leader of the Year by the Northern Pima County Chamber of Commerce, and is a patron of the children's room in the Oro Valley Public Library.

"I believe that Oro Valley truly is a 'community of excellence,' and I want to do all I can to ensure we continue to have the resources required to sustain Oro Valley as a desirable place to live and work," Hiremath said.

Oro Valley Mayor Paul Loomis completes a four-year term in 2010. In addition, three four-year council seats go before the voters in the March 9, 2010 primary and the May 18, 2010 general election. Those seats are currently held by Paula Abbott, Kenneth "K.C." Carter and Al Kunisch. Resident Mary Snider has announced her candidacy for a council seat.
