Officers from police departments within the Southern Arizona DUI Task Force — among them, Marana, Oro Valley, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Pima College and the Arizona Department of Public Safety — made 34 arrests of possibly impaired drivers on Dec. 31, a release said.

One was a felony; the others, misdemeanors. Five of those arrested had prior DUI offenses. Two were under the age of 21. Eight had blood alcohol content levels of .15 or higher, characterized as “extreme” DUI cases.

The task force deployed from 8 p.m. New Year’s Eve to 4 a.m. New Year’s Day, attempting to “detect, investigate and remove those drivers found to be impaired to the slightest degree from the use of alcohol and/or drugs,” a release said.

The agencies had 358 total stops, issuing 198 moving and non-moving citations, 15 arrests for underage drinking, and 18 seat belt citations. During the holiday season that began Nov. 26, 385 drivers were cited for driving under the influence, the release said.
