The Amphitheater School District Governing Board last week recognized an Oro Valley police officer for her efforts at teaching children about drugs.

Officer Wendy Davis of the Oro Valley Police Department spearheaded the drug awareness program for local fifth-grade students.

"I decided to try to make an event where they could get away from the classroom atmosphere," Davis said.

The event, held at Canyon del Oro Riverfront Park, featured speakers from numerous law enforcement agencies.

"We had people come out who have been affected by drug abuse," Davis said.

Among the speakers was the mother of a teen-aged boy who died from a drug overdose, as well as the sister of an overdose victim. Recovering drug addicts also spoke to the students about the dangers of addiction.

Davis said the students got the most excitement out of a federal Drug Enforcement Administration Blackhawk helicopter, which landed at the park for the event.

More than 800 students participated in the event last April. The drug awareness program drew students from all Amphitheater and private schools in Oro Valley as well as three schools from outside of town.

This was the second year the department held the event, with partners the Oro Valley Optimist Club, the Oro Valley Fraternal Order of Police #53, Fry's and Target.

"It's going to grow and better," Davis said.
