An Oro Valley Town Council member has resigned from her elected position with more than seven months remaining in her term of office.

Councilwoman Paula Abbott will resign effective immediately after nearly eight years on the council, according to a Monday release from the town.

"Due to family circumstances, I am resigning from office effective immediately," Abbott wrote in a Nov. 9 e-mail to fellow council members. "It has been an honor and privilege to represent the citizens of Oro Valley the last 7.5 years and I will miss working with our dedicated council members and staff."

Mayor Paul Loomis revealed Abbott's decision at the Nov. 9 town council study session.

"I would like to thank Councilmember Abbott for her years of dedicated service on behalf of our community, and we wish her and her family well," Loomis said.

The council has to vote to formally accept Abbott's resignation, which it plans to do Nov. 18.

According to town code, the council has the authority to fill vacancies. The council will consider a process for filling the vacancy at its retreat, scheduled for Saturday, Nov 14.
