The third-annual Harvest for Hope 5K non-competitive run/walk, which takes place Saturday, Oct. 4, will help collect food for the hungry in northern Pima County.

The event will start at 5 p.m. at Riverfront Park, 551 Lambert Lane.

No entry fee is required to participate. Walkers and runners need only bring a bag of non-perishable food, which will be donated to Catalina Community Services.

“This event raises awareness of the hunger issues that face many families in northern Pima County,” according to organizer Dawn Kulesa, of Lifestyle and Fitness Coaching. “Oro Valley is a prosperous community, and you don’t think that we have these issues here, but we do. This event will not only feed the hungry, but also provides a venue in which the community can come together on a beautiful fall evening and have fun with their family and neighbors.”

The 200 participants in last year’s Harvest for Hope 5K donated more than 5,000 pounds of food to Catalina Community Services. The event also raised $4,300 in scholarship money.

A raffle will follow the 5K. Participants will automatically be entered in the drawing.

The first 500 walkers/runners to register will receive a T-shirt, and all finishers will receive medals.

To register, go to, or pick up an entry form at the All About Running and Walking store in the Rancho Vistoso Safeway plaza. Participants also may register at the event.

Pre-bagged food is available for sale at the Trader Joe’s store, 7912 N. Oracle Road, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 1 through Saturday, Oct. 4.
