An effort to combat underage drinking in Marana resumed Tuesday, when law enforcement, community members and representatives of the Marana Northwest Community Partnership Coalition shared information on preventive programs.

At a Tuesday luncheon, coalition representatives talked about Responsibility, Education and Deterrence, the underage drinking program that includes free, state-licensed training for beverage servers, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving "Safe and Smart" store product placement training.

R.E.D. is "the first program of its type in Pima County for educating and rewarding merchants concerning the dangers and legalities of serving or selling to underage drinkers and overselling to legal age adults," a release said. Participating merchants learn how to recognize fake identification, and how to refuse a sale safely and appropriately. Last year, 17 merchant employees received free, state-licensed liquor service training valued at $35 per person.

The coalition, along with the Pima County Community Prevention Coalition and Walmart Super Center of Marana, sponsored the Tuesday event at the Wheeler Taft Abbett, Sr. Library.

Program funding comes from the Pima County Community Prevention Coalition.
