A pair of rental agreements come up for renewal on the Oro Valley Town Council agenda for Wednesday, Aug. 19.

The Oro Valley Police Department rents a section of the Washington Federal Credit Union building at Magee and Oracle roads, while the Parks and Recreation Department lease a space across from town hall on La Cañada Drive.

The police department rents the 2,136-sqare-foot space for $2,625 per month. The agreement would extend the lease period at that rate to Dec. 31. Beginning in 2010, the rent would go up to $2,704 per month with annual increases of 2 percent. Rent in 2011 would cost $2,785, and in 2012 would cost $2,869 per month. The town would pay $110,809.56 for the space during the contract period.

Parks and Recreation seeks to continue for five years an agreement for a 1,370-square-foot space at La Cañada Drive and Naranja Road. The space would cost $2,070 per month, taking place retroactively Aug. 1 and running through Aug. 31, 2014.

The rent would stay at that rate for two years, after which time it increases by 8.5 percent per year. The total cost for rent during the rental agreement totals $137,329.68.

Council to decide sign debate

Council members plan to make a decision regarding the much-debated Oro Valley wall-sign code.

The council could decide on an amendment to the town code to allow illuminated wall signs to stay on until 10 p.m. or until a business closes, whichever comes later.

The change differs little from the current code that mandates illuminated signs be switched off one hour after a business closes.

The Northern Pima County Chamber of Commerce has asked the council to allow signs to remain on all night, or from "dusk till dawn."

The chamber has called signs an important advertising tool for businesses, especially during the current recession.

Wildlife study proposal

A proposal before the council would place the town in partnership with the Town of Marana for a study of wildlife along Tangerine Road between Interstate 10 and La Cañada Drive.

Oro Valley would act as the lead agency for the study, with the Regional Transportation Authority footing the bill. The Arizona Game and Fish Department would conduct the study. Oro Valley and Marana would be responsible for their respective employee time accrued during the study period.

A second stretch of road suggested for analysis is La Cholla Boulevard between Tangerine and Overton roads.

The scope of the studies would be to analyze roadkill found along the selected roads. The numbers, locations and types of carrion would indicate the areas of heavy animal traffic and help decide the most suitable locations for construction of animal crossing structures.

The RTA has a budget of $45 million for such structures and would fund their construction should it be deemed appropriate to build.

The Town of Marana has previously agreed to enter an agreement with Oro Valley and Pima County to study improvement of Tangerine Road between I-10 and La Cañada.

The Oro Valley Town Council meets at 6 p.m. at town hall located at 11000 N. La Cañada Drive.
