Sun Tran is providing service to a new park-and-ride and bus stop at Casino del Sol, making mass transit a new travel option for employees, neighbors and customers of the casino and the Anselmo Valencia Amphitheater.

The park-and-ride is the first for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and the sixth park-and-ride lot installed in the region with funding from the Regional Transportation Authority.

Officials from the RTA, Pascua Yaqui Tribe, Casino del Sol, Pima County and Sun Tran celebrated the new facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday.

RTA was able to extend bus service and construct the parking lot due to additional funding support from the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and Casino del Sol, allowing Sun Tran to implement Route 27 to the casino more than three years ahead of schedule.

The new park-and-ride provides more than 100 parking spaces and is located on the northern area of the AVA parking lot. The bus stop, which is serviced by Sun Tran Route 27, has a shaded cover, a water fountain, solar-powered lighting and a bicycle rack.

The Regional Transportation Authority is the fiscal manager of the $2.1 billion plan approved by Pima County voters on May 16, 2006. The RTA Board is comprised of representatives from the local jurisdictions in Pima County, including the cities of Tucson and South Tucson, Pima County, the towns of Marana, Oro Valley and Sahuarita, the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and the Tohono O'odham Nation. A representative of the Arizona State Transportation Board also serves on the board.
