Marana Middle School is receiving a $5,000 “Disney’s High School Musical: The Music in You” cash grant, and a $4,000 licensing waiver for its Nov. 19-22 production of High School Musical.
The award is being presented by representatives from The NAMM Foundation and Disney’s The Music in You Grant Program at the Thursday board meeting of the Marana Unified School District. Accepting are Dr. Allison Murphy, Marana Middle School principal, and Ivy Sweeney, Marana Middle School drama teacher.
Marana Middle School is the only school in Arizona and one of 10 middle and high schools across the country to receive the award.
“Marana Middle School will receive a cash grant of $5,000 to help fulfill the educational goals outlined in their school proposal and a waiver of up to $4,000 toward the licensing to produce High School Musical in their school,” said Mary L. Luehrsen, executive director of The NAMM Foundation. “We recognize and applaud this community’s support for music and arts education and for its commitment to providing a complete education for all students.”
“The clear values and messages in High School Musical were the driving forces behind our desire to have our students perform this musical,” Sweeney said. “Over 150 individuals including the middle school student performers, high school students, elementary students, community members and Marana Middle School and Marana High School alumni will make the theme We Are All in This Together a reality.”
“Partnerships such as this help student’s focus on the importance of school and how it relates to their goals and aspirations,” Murphy said. “We are extremely appreciative to The NAMM Foundation and Disney Channel for this opportunity and the positive impact it will have on our students.”
High School Musical is staged Nov. 19 through 22 at 7 p.m. each night in the Marana Middle School Theater, 11279 W. Grier Road. It is open to the public. Admission is $5 per person. Tickets are available in advance at 682-4730, or at the door.
