Tucson police have arrested a man who may be responsible for three bank robberies in the Northwest and a total of seven similar heists throughout Tucson.

After robbing an east side bank yesterday, police arrested Joseph Diaz, 53, after a bank customer who witnessed the robbery confronted the suspect.

The customer attempted to stop Diaz before getting the license plate numbers from his getaway car.

Police later followed Diaz to an area near Pima Street and Rosemont Boulevard where he crashed his car into the front yard of a house where he was arrested.

Diaz is suspected of robbing the Compass Bank Dec. 2, a Wells Fargo Nov. 28 and a Bank of America on Nov. 4.

All the banks are located on North Oracle Road.

A police spokesman said investigators think Diaz in recent months has robbed three banks in Tucson.

Booking photos of Diaz have not been made available because police intend to hold lineups to determine if bank employees and other eye-witnesses can identify his as the robber.

Police think Diaz is homeless and had been living in area motels.
