Fire district moves ahead
Yaron Yarden/The Explorer, The proposed annexation would increase the Mountain Vista Fire District’s property value by $45.4 million. The governing board plans to have a public hearing on the matter Wednesday, April 29 at 6 p.m.

Earlier this month, the Oro Valley Town Council voted to allow the Mountain Vista Fire District to petition for the annexation of portions of the town south of Hardy Road.

In response, the Mountain Vista governing board plans to meet Wednesday, April 29, to field public comments and discuss the possibility of initiating annexation proceedings in the town.

If district leaders decide that expansion is in the best interest of Mountain Vista and its residents, they could soon start circulating petitions for annexation.

More than 50 percent of property owners would have to approve for the annexation to proceed. Rural / Metro Fire Department currently serves the proposed annexation area.

Before a fire district can move into incorporated areas like Oro Valley, it must first gain the approval of the local governing body. Until now, the Golder Ranch Fire District possessed the sole right to annex in Oro Valley.

The boundary expansion would increase the estimated assessed valuation of property in Mountain Vista Fire District by $45.4 million.

District residents pay a $1.25 secondary property tax rate for fire protection. Rural / Metro charges residents in the proposed annexation areas $1.59.

Mountain Vista district covers about 12 square miles and provides fire protection to more than 25,000 residents.
