The Canyon Del Oro High School Academic Decathlon team won its second state title last weekend during competition in Phoenix.

The CDO squad beat its nearest competitor by 3,000 points, said Coach Chris Yetman, a calculus teacher at the Oro Valley high school.

CDO last won an Academic Decathlon title in 2006. The school has won regional the last eight Southern Arizona regional competitions.

The team will go on to compete for the national title in Memphis, Tenn., April 22 through 25.

The Academic Decathlon tests students’ mental acuity in several subject areas, from math and science to arts and literature. The competition is designed to include students with all academic abilities. Each team consists of nine members, who are divided into three categories based on grade-point average — honors (3.75-4.0 GPA), scholastic (3.0-3.74 GPA) and varsity (0.0-2.99 GPA).

Individual honors went to CDO senior Ben Ferell for the top essay, senior Taylor Cleland for second-highest overall score, senior Marie Clymer for B-category high score and junior Jordan Kurker-Mraz for the C-category’s second-highest score.

The team won the competition’s “Super Quiz” event.

Two other Northwest schools competed in the state tournament.

Mountain View High School finished in fourth place.

Sonoran Science Academy was the top small school and won the competition’s rookie of the year award.
