It was a dark day for pastry lovers in August 2006 when a bankruptcy forced the doughnut giant Krispy Kreme to switch off deep-fat fryers across Arizona, including two stores in Tucson.

Since then, the Winston-Salem, N.C.-based pastry magnate has started to claw its way back into the southern Arizona, including one in Marana and another recently opened in Oro Valley.

The owners of Oracle Crossings shopping center near Oracle and Magee roads, Weingarten Nostat Inc., have requested an amendment to an agreement that brought the area into the town.

They want the town to allow Krispy Kreme to enlarge its sign six times the size of what's permitted according to the annexation agreement and town zoning codes. The larger sign would cover 61 square feet.

"This is their right as an applicant to ask for an amendment to the code," Oro Valley Town Councilman Bill Garner said.

Garner noted, however, that the deck appears stacked against Krispy Kreme on this request.

The proposed change well exceeds the allowable size of approximately 10 square feet. Town zoning staffers have recommended the council reject the request.

A staff report indicates that because the company uses a logo sign, size limitations are greater than if the sign was simply letters that spelled out the company name.

"A larger tenant with over 100 feet of linear frontage is only permitted to have a logo sign that is 30 square feet, half the size of the applicant's request," according to the staff report.

Krispy Kreme has roughly 30 feet of storefront at its Oro Valley location at 7805 N. Oracle Road.

The council meets Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. Meetings are held at town hall, 11000 N. La Cañada Drive.
