A house fire in Picture Rocks that started in a garage destroyed a double-wide mobile home, a single-wide home that was used as a storage shed, and three vehicles last Wednesday.

According to a spokeswoman for Picture Rocks Fire District, the residents were home at the time of the fire. One was outside and noticed smoke coming from the garage. He called for his wife to call 9-1-1, then they left the home.

No one was injured in the fire. Its cause had not been determined.

About 40 firefighters and medical personnel from Picture Rocks Fire, Northwest Fire, Avra Valley Fire, Three Points Fire and Rural Metro Ambulance responded to the fire. Due to its location, the nearest hydrant was about a mile away and water had to be hauled in.

"That compromised a little bit of the operation," said Debbie Trimble, a division chief for Picture Rocks Fire District. "Just trying to get the water to be continually flowing throughout the whole operation. If we would have had a hydrant closer, it sure would have sure helped.

"We did have a lot of people there and they worked very, very hard."

Picture Rocks Fire District covers about 33 square miles and responds to about five house fires a year.
