Mark Finchem, a real estate agent, former public safety officer and past Intuit manager, has announced his candidacy for a seat on the Oro Valley Town Council.

Finchem is prompted to run by "recent talk of another tax increase," he said in a release.

"This is not the time to impose more taxes on people struggling to balance less income with higher expenses for many basic items; as well as the utility tax imposed only a few years ago," Finchem said. "Families are struggling to reduce spending in light of lower incomes and declining asset values. It is time government does the same.

"I will be a strong advocate for controlling government spending so we can get everyone moving in the right direction again."

Finchem lives in Oro Valley with his wife Tanya. He has four adult children.

Finchem was a public safety officer in Kalamazoo, Mich., for 22 years. After six years working for Tucson-based Intuit as a senior manager in the Small Business Division, Finchem launched his real estate career in 2008. He works with Long Realty.

Finchem is holding a "meet the candidate" session from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Oro Valley Public Library, 1305 W. Naranja Drive. He is inviting input on "what the agenda of the Oro Valley Town Council should be from the perspective of small business owners and residents," the release said.

"Be prepared to engage in a frank conversation designed to identify the most urgent and important components of how to make Oro Valley more 'customer-centric,'" Finchem concluded.
