Mike Mencinger, the town of Marana director of operations and maintenance, lost his job in budget-cutting government reorganization.

Last Tuesday, Mencinger asked to speak before the town council and audience. He took the podium, and acknowledged all in the room, including his wife.

"I've worked for the town 6-1/2 years now," Mencinger said. "It's been enjoyable, and an honor to serve you.

"I know I'm the one eliminated, that's OK," he said.

Mencinger said his department did "a great job. I'm proud of the guys," and grateful for the support of everyone he worked with. "We had a lot of innovations. We accomplished a lot of stuff."

Mencinger expressed concern for other department employees, pointing out many of them reside in the community.

"I would like to see them continue on with that high level of maintenance they've been able to provide," he said.

"Thank you."

As he walked away, Mencinger received prolonged, warm applause.

The other absorbed position, assistant chief of police, has been occupied by Barbara Harris, the sometimes embattled police department administrator who has held the position since reinstatement the first of the year. Harris did not speak Tuesday.
