Paul Kappelman, chief executive officer of Northwest Medical Center, has resigned his position, the hospital said in a Tuesday afternoon announcement.

Kappelman, in the leadership structure at Northwest Medical Center since 1998, is pursuing a career opportunity in Dallas.

Transition plans are being made and will be announced as details are finalized, the release said. A national search for a new CEO is under way, involving hospital and medical staff leaders.

Kappelman began his career at Northwest Medical Center in 1998 as assistant CEO. In 2003, he assumed the CEO role for Northwest Medical Center Oro Valley (now Oro Valley Hospital) and led the development and opening of that hospital. In 2007, Kappelman returned to NMC as its CEO.

“This was a very difficult decision for me both personally and professionally,” Kappelman said. “ My family and I love Tucson, and Northwest Medical Center is an outstanding hospital. We have a tremendous staff dedicated to providing high-quality care. I have also truly enjoyed the collaboration with our physicians. They are some of the best doctors I have worked with. I’m confident that employees and physicians will continue to deliver on Northwest’s commitment to providing great patient care.”

“Northwest has grown under Paul’s leadership,” said John Carhuff, chair of the Northwest Medical board of trustees. “We will miss him and wish him the best. I am confident that our medical staff and executive team at Northwest will remain strong and focused on the needs of our community. Month after month we see how dedicated to excellence the Northwest family is.”
