Two longtime workers are being recognized as "employees of the year" among support staff at the Marana Unified School District.

Terry Pickell and Pete Salazar are being honored by the school board at its May 14 meeting.

Pickell, a Marana High School aide, is the Support Staff Clerical Employee of the Year. Salazar, Estes Elementary School building maintenance worker, is the Support Staff Operational Employee of the Year.

Pickell has been with the district for 19 years and is described as having "the ability to motivate, organize and train others." She "is essential in building a caring safe community and always willing to do any task that teachers request." Pickell "is always looking out for student's best interests, is involved in many aspects of the school and is always quick to volunteer for special projects."

In addition to her regular duties, she has been a class sponsor and has been actively involved in the ERASE group, which focuses on the elimination of discrimination on the MHS campus.

Salazar has been with the district for 29 years, and is described as "a good role model." He "demonstrates pride in community and school and consistently gives "120 percent." Salazar has "always been appreciated and liked by teachers and staff." He "is always there to talk with children who need someone to talk to."

In addition to his regular duties, Mr. Salazar also works with troubled children, is always willing to help staff with extra projects, and serves as a Spanish translator.
