Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge #2815 hosted lunch for 28 veterans from the blind and geriatrics centers of Tucson’s Veterans Administration medical facility on Saturday, April 4.

Billy Tyre, veterans service committee chairman, organized the event. Lodge house committee members prepared Mexican food at the request of the veterans.

Exalted Ruler Larry Megahan welcomed the veterans and thanked them for their service.

Elks member Joe Anich, who was a patient at the blind rehabilitation center three years ago, offered words of encouragement.

Jerry Bartee played the guitar and sang country western songs during lunch. Chairman Billy Tyre presented the veterans with a baseball cap and a small American Flag as they departed.

Catalina Mountain donated more than $76,000 in clothing, blankets, and toiletries to the VA medical facility last year.

Since the beginning of the year, a pool table and miscellaneous items worth $10,624 have been provided to veterans.

Another $500 was donated to veterans with spinal cord injuries at the VA medical center in Palo Alto, Calif., allowing them to participate in wheelchair games in Spokane, Wash.

Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge #2815 was instituted in October 2000 and has 365 members.
