Hundreds of residents came to the corner of Lon Adams and Tangerine Farms roads to celebrate the opening of a major roadway linking the Gladden Farms housing development with Interstate 10.

The Tangerine Farms Road project opened to the public June 25, featuring a 3.8-mile connection between the Tangerine Road interchange and Moore Road.

At the kick-off event, town officials noted that the road was a long time coming and that the lighted thoroughfare will stimulate growth in the area.

Marana leaders hope the new four-lane, divided roadway will speed development in the North Marana area, bringing the Fry’s Marketplace and other businesses.

The $30 million project was funded by bonds, improvement district property assessments, impact fees and town funds.

Also included in the project is a pedestrian underpass near Lon Adams Road.

Intersection signals are currently being installed near the interstate and the frontage road in both directions is still blocked off.

The intersection of the road project and I-10 has previously piqued the interest of future developments. Westcor plans to locate the Shoppes at Tangerine in the area, which will feature a retail shops and an auto mall. The speculated move of the Colorado Rockies from Hi Corbett Field has also been pegged.

The road work had been one of Town Manager Mike Reuwsaat’s projects he had pushed for the town council to adopt, citing the need for easy access to the relativly new home developments in North Marana.

Another area of Marana, Dove Mountain is expected to also gain eaiser access to I-10, when the Twin Peaks Interchange and Camino de Mañana projects begin later this year.
