Tom Ellis, director of the Marana Parks and Recreation Department, has received a Friend of the Trails award from the advocacy group Pima Trails Association.
The award goes to a person “who has shown dedication to and support for protecting, developing and planning recreational, non-motorized trails in eastern Pima County,” according to the association’s newsletter.
“We thank Tom for his efforts for trail access and preservation,” president Sue Clark said.
Ellis led the effort to develop the trail system in Marana’s 2,400-acre Tortolita Preserve, and is working to create trails in the southwestern portion of the Tortolita Mountains.
Ellis is further updating Marana’s parks and trails plan, is participating in the regional trails master plan update, and is a member of the River Parks Task Force.
