Police with the Pima County Regional SWAT Team shot and killed a man in a Northwest home on Friday, Aug. 27.

Pima County Sheriff's deputies responded to a home on the 4200 block of West Pyracantha Drive, near Magee and Oldfather roads, after receiving a 9-1-1 call.

The caller, later identified as Tim Debeau, 57, told the emergency operator, "I just killed my girlfriend," according to sheriff's department news release.

Deputies responded to the house at about 9 p.m. and unsuccessfully attempted to contact Debeau, who then barricaded himself inside the house.

Neighbors in surrounding homes were evacuated and a robot was later used to inspect the house. Cameras on the robot captured images through an open door of a lifeless Yolonda Pronko, 53.

A standoff with Debeau lasted until about 1 a.m., according to Pima County Sheriff's spokesman Jason Ogan.

Debeau later emerged from the home holding a knife and a hammer. SWAT Team members fired at Debeau multiple times after he made what was described as "aggressive movements" toward the officers. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

A statement from the sheriff's department said Pronko had "obvious signs of trauma" when her body was taken from the house. Ogan said her cause of death was under investigation.

The SWAT members who fired the deadly rounds at Debeau have been placed on administrative leave through Wednesday. They were identified as Deputy Stephen Ferree and Detective Kevin Kubitskey. Ferree has been a member of the sheriff's department since 2004, and Kubitskey since 1999.

An Oro Valley police officer also was on the SWAT Team. Officer Jason Horetski, a six-year employee, fired a weapon that uses non-lethal rounds. He was not placed on leave.

The incident remains under investigation.
