The arrest last week of a woman in connection with a bank robbery in Oro Valley exemplified quality community policing, according to Oro Valley Police Chief Danny Sharp.

"It highlighted and really illustrated the type of police department we have, where people don't say, 'It's not my job.'" Sharp said.

At a few minutes past noon on Tuesday, Aug. 17, Cheryl Suzanne Violet, 47, entered the Bank of America at 12132 N. Rancho Vistoso Boulevard. Using a note, she demanded money. Violet was disguised as a man at the time of the robbery, wearing a fake beard.

Sharp said almost the entire force sprang into action when the robbery call came in. The response was complicated, however, when almost at the same time another crime situation arose.

"About three minutes into the call, we had a call of a home invasion in another part of town," Sharp said.

Many of the responding officers were diverted to the second call. One of those, an internal affairs sergeant driving an unmarked car, was later leaving the scene and pulled onto La Cañada Drive, directly behind the suspected bank robber.

Other officers, including school resource officers and executive staff members, assisted in making the high-risk traffic stop that brought Violet's hope for an easy escape to end.

"When the job needs to get done, it doesn't matter what your job is," Sharp said.

Violet was arrested near La Cañada and Lambert Lane without incident. Police recovered the money taken in the robbery and found the clothing items and disguise she discarded after leaving the scene.

Violet was taken to Pima County Adult Detention Center and booked into jail where she remains. She has a court hearing scheduled for Friday, Aug. 27.
