On Thursday, Dec. 2, a about 10:15 a.m., Oro Valley police responded to a report of three Ironwood Ridge High School students walking along Shannon Road near Naranja Drive who were said to be smoking marijuana. When police arrived, the suspects said they were all 14 years old. One of the student said he had dropped out of school and was home schooled. He misspelled his last name when the officer questioned him, according to a police report. The officer told the suspects they were under arrest for truancy. After a search of their pockets, the officer found lighters, a can of snuff tobacco and two marijuana-smoking pipes – one of which smelled of marijuana. The suspect said the second pipe was used for smoking imitation marijuana called “spice.” All of the students were charged with truancy and possession of tobacco. One of the students also was charged with obstructing a government operation and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Monday, Nov. 29, at about 2:50 p.m., Oro Valley police responded to Copper Creek Elementary School in response to a 9-year-old student in possession of a pocketknife. The knife had a folding blade measuring 3-7/8 inches folded with three blades. The student said he had found the knife in Pinetop and brought it with him from home, according to police reports. When asked what he was going to do with the knife, the student told police that he was “just going to carry it around.” When asked what people could do with knives, the student said, “you could kill someone or hurt someone,” according to police reports. The student did not threaten anyone with the knife or take it out of his pocket to show anyone. The only time it came out was in class when the student stretched and it fell out of his pocket. The student was arrested for possession of the knife and released to the custody of his father.
