It has no name but at least officials now have identified the sex of a mysterious human skull.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department announced today the skull is that of a male after receiving an update from the Office of the Medical Examiner. Until then, the sex of the victim, as well as other information, remained unknown.

Yesterday, the sheriff's department had released pictures of the skull, on which the FBI laboratory in Washington, D.C., had completed a facial reconstruction in the hopes someone would identify it.

The skull was discovered on Feb. 8, 2010, when a family dog brought the skull home and placed it near the front door of its owners' house, located in the 13200 block of West Orange Grove Road in Picture Rocks.

Deputies from the Tucson Mountain District responded when the resident called 911.

Responding deputies noted the skull had a defect on its right side, according the information released by Deputy Dawn M. Barkman, public information officer for the sheriff's department. A bullet was still lodged inside the skull, according the medical examiner's office.

Homicide unit detectives responded for further investigation. A search was conducted over the next several days to look for additional remains; however, none were located.

In June 2010, the skull was sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation laboratory in Washington, D.C., where a facial reconstruction was completed utilizing the unidentified skull.

Until today, the FBI and the Office of the Medical Examiner had been unable to determine the sex of the victim. They believe he was Hispanic or Caucasian, and between 18 and 30 years of age. The victim also had a large amount of dental restoration, and the front teeth were significantly worn.

The sheriff's department asks anyone with information of a possible identity to contact 911 or 88-CRIME.
