A woman walked into Monday night's Twin Peaks Interchange open house, and asked two questions.
"When's it going to start? When's it going to be done?"
It's starting now; formal groundbreaking on the $50.5 million I-10 interchange and related road improvement project is slated for this Monday morning, May 11. Construction by Pulice Construction, Inc., is expected to take 18 months.
The new interchange, being built between the Avra Valley Road and Cortaro Road interchanges, is expected to unite Dove Mountain with Continental Ranch, connect with the upcoming improvements of Camino de Mañana, and cut travel times in the Northwest by taking pressure off Cortaro Road.
There was no formal program Monday night at the Wheeler Taft Abbett Sr. Library; a crowd of visitors studied maps, renditions of public art, fact sheets and booklets explaining the project and its processes.
The Twin Peaks project includes construction of a new road, the two-way Tiffany Loop, between I-10 and Continental Ranch on the west side of the interstate. It's intended to provide local business access. Tiffany Loop will run roughly parallel to the interstate, wrapped around the new interchange itself.
Multiple use pedestrian paths are going to stretch beneath Twin Peaks Road. Union Pacific Railroad tracks are going to be spanned by a bridge, nixing any traffic interruptions for passing trains.
Twin Peaks Road is being extended west of the Santa Cruz River, to Camino de Mañana and Linda Vista Boulevard east of I-10. This summer, Camino de Mañana is being realigned by the town of Marana and Borderland Construction, Inc. That road is being realigned from the new Twin Peaks interchange to Dove Mountain Boulevard at Tangerine Road, serving as an arterial to maintain local and regional traffic flows. Wildlife crossings are part of the project.
