Network gives O2 masks for pets to district

Northwest Firefighters are getting new equipment to help save pets in crisis.

Tucson Pet Care Network is donating oxygen masks specially made to fit noses and snouts of cats and dogs, as well as rabbits, ferrets, birds and more, so firefighters can administer oxygen at emergency scenes.

Representatives were presenting the first set of masks for Northwest Fire trucks on Wednesday, March 3, at Northwest Fire Station 38. Furry friends were due to help demonstrate use of the special masks.

"Many people consider pets members of the family," says Northwest Fire Capt. Adam Goldberg, "and the devastation of losing a cherished pet is often much greater than the trauma of losing a house or possessions."

Tucson Pet Care Network's goal is to get a pet oxygen mask on every fire truck in the Tucson metro area.

"We've already donated some masks to local fire stations," said Kate Titus, group chairperson and owner of A Loyal Companion Massage Therapy, "but we want to make sure there is one on every truck that might be responding to a fire."

Businesses in the Tucson Pet Care Network accept donations toward pet oxygen masks and the organization's website,, also accepts donations and will allow you to enter the zip code where you want your donation to be used.


Ironwood's kindergarten sign-up week of March 22

Marana Unified School District's Ironwood Elementary is holding its round-up of kindergarteners during the week of March 22.

Parents who wish to enroll their kindergarten children, who will be age 5 by Aug. 31 and plan to attend Ironwood Elementary School, should stop by the school during office hours, 7 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

In order to register a child, the parent or guardian must bring the child's birth certificate, up-to-date immunization records signed by a physician, and two proofs of residence within the Ironwood's attendance area, such as any bill, rental agreement or sales agreement.

Marana's next budget open house March 3

Marana is holding a second open house for public comment on its fiscal 2010-'11 budget this Wednesday, March 3, at 6 p.m., at the Heritage Highlands Community Center, 4949 W. Heritage Club Blvd.

The town's first budget open house was attended by more than 60 residents last Wednesday at Twin Peaks Elementary School.

Marana's next fiscal budget "will be a challenge with anticipated reductions in money the town receives from the State of Arizona and from different types of sales tax," a release said. "The town receives most of its revenue from these two sources because it does not have a property tax. In order to plan carefully, staff is working on a budget that takes effect July 1."

"The town must make decisions about what level of services it can fund when less money is coming in," said Town Manager Gilbert Davidson. "It's important that council and staff receive comments from citizens as the Town begins to create a budget for next year that includes the services that reflect community values."



S. AZ employers nominated for armed service support awards

Employees named companies for DOD recognition

Numerous Arizona employers have been nominated for a U.S. Department of Defense award that recognizes continued support of workers who serve in the armed services.

Arizona National Guard and Reserve service members nominated their employers for the 2010 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for their outstanding support of their employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve. 

Only members of the guard and reserve or their families are eligible to nominate employers for the award.

 The Department of Defense will announce the 2010 Freedom Award recipients this summer.  Recipients will be presented the Freedom Award at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on September 23, 2010. 

 The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 under the auspices of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).

A Department of Defense agency, ESGR was established in 1972. Its mission is to gain and maintain employer support for guard and reserve service by recognizing outstanding support, increasing awareness of the law and resolving conflict through mediation. 

Since 1996, only 130 Freedom Awards have been given.

Vocal quartet at St. Philip's March 12

On Friday, March 12, The Five Seasons vocal quartet is performing at St. Philip's Church.

Beginning at 7:30 p.m., the St. Philip's Friends of Music presents "Brahms to Bebop." The quartet will sing Brahms' lilting "Leibeslieder Waltzes," a set of 18 short waltzes for quartet and four hands at the piano. The second half of the program features American classics from Stephen Foster, Aaron Copland and George Gershwin.

Two selections from Gilbert and Sullivan round out the program.

This event is open to the public. Admission is by donation to St. Philip's Friends of Music, with a suggested donation of $15.

Democratic AG candidates in Oro Valley

Democrat candidates David Lujan and Vince Rabago, both running for the state attorney general's office, are speaking at the general meeting of the Democrats of Oro Valley on Monday, March 8.

The meeting is free and open to the public. It begins at 7 p.m. in the large meeting room at the Oro Valley Public Library, La Cañada and Naranja Drive.
