Middle school students from more than 20 schools in the Tucson area are registered to participate in this year’s Southern Arizona Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition, to be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, at Cienega High School, 12775 E. Mary Ann Cleveland Way.

About 175 students are expected to participate in this year’s competition, according to a release.

A report with final rankings of the top teams and students will be released at the end of the competition.

MATHCOUNTS promotes math achievement with all the challenges and excitement of a school sports event. Student “Mathletes” train individually and in teams. They have the opportunity to compete in local, state and national competitions, with prizes awarded at all levels.

The top four students in Arizona will receive a free trip to Orlando, Fla., for the national competition in May.

National winners receive college scholarships, and the champion Mathlete wins a trip to the U.S. Space Camp.
