Jan. 8, 2011: Five hours after a local congresswoman was critically injured, law enforcement agencies still have the area surrounding the crime scene locked down.

Shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday, an armed gunman shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others during one of her “Congress on Your Corner” events at a Safeway at Ina and Oracle roads in northwest Tucson. Surgeons at University Medical Center in Tucson are “very optimistic” about her recovery. Following surgery, Giffords was following commands, said Dr. Peter Rhee during a press conference Saturday afternoon.

Six people, including a 9-year-old girl and federal judge John Roll, were killed, and another 18 were injured during the shooting.

The police have arrested Jared Laughner, 22, in connection with the case. The gunman is believed to have used a pistol with an extended magazine. Clerks in stores in the shopping center reported hearing between 10 and 20 shots fired.

Roads and parking lots around the intersection of Ina and Oracle are closed while law enforcement continues its investigation. Police are looking into a report of a white pickup truck caught on a surveillance camera speeding through the parking lot. They do not know whether it is connected to the case.

OV's Council on Your Corner cancelled

The Town of Oro Valley’s Council on Your Corner 2.0 hosted by Councilmember Joe Hornat, which was scheduled for 3 p.m. today, has been cancelled.

The cancellation of this event is due to the tragic shooting at Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ event this morning.

This decision to cancel Council on Your Corner 2.0 was made by the Mayor Hiremath after consultation with the Oro Valley Chief of Police and his concern for the safety of Town citizens.

The Town of Oro Valley’s Council on Your Corner 2.0 will be rescheduled at a future date.
